 Where it came from

## History of the format

When the suffix alphabet ran out in 1983 the obvious answer was to start again, this time with the year letter at the *front*. A-prefix plates arrived on 1 August 1983 and the system reused the same 21 letters, running August to July exactly as the later suffix years had.

The pace changed in 1999. Concentrating a year’s registrations into August was distorting the car market, so from S (August 1998) the letter changed every six months: T in March 1999, V in September 1999, W in March 2000, and so on. That accelerated the end of the format — Y was issued from March 2001 and the current two-letter, two-digit system replaced it on 1 September 2001.

Because so many combinations exist, prefix plates are the most affordable dated format and the entry point for most first-time private plate buyers.

 Reading the year

## Prefix year letters

Find the identifier on the plate and read the period straight off. Any vehicle first registered in that period **or later** can carry the plate. Not sure? [Type the registration into the year checker](https://buyprivateplates.uk/number-plate-year-checker/).

 The gaps in the alphabet

## Letters that were never used

As with the suffix system, **I**, **O**, **Q**, **U** and **Z** were never issued as prefix year letters. In the three-letter group, I and Q were also excluded; Z was permitted there only in Northern Ireland. A Q at the front of a plate means the vehicle’s age or identity could not be verified — it is not a prefix plate and cannot be transferred.

 Where the letters point

## Regional codes and memory tags

The last two letters of the three-letter group identified the DVLA local office, so a prefix plate quietly records where the car was first registered. Buyers today rarely care, but it explains why some letter pairs are plentiful (busy offices) and others scarce.

 The one rule that matters

## Which vehicles can carry this format

Read the year from the first letter and the plate can be assigned to any vehicle first registered in that period **or later**. R-prefix (1997–98) on a 2010 car: fine. R-prefix on a 1995 car: not allowed. We show the earliest eligible date on every plate page, and the year checker will confirm any registration you type.

 From the trade

## Buying tips

- Three letters that spell a name or initials with a low number (A1 BCD, R5 XYZ) are the sweet spot for value and readability.
- The 1999–2001 six-month letters (S, T, V, W, X, Y) were issued in smaller volumes and can be scarcer.
- Single-digit prefix plates command a premium; two and three digits offer most of the look for much less.
- Prefix plates suit almost every car on the road today, since anything from 1983 onward is eligible.

 Common questions

## Prefix Number Plates Explained: FAQ

**What year is a P-prefix plate?**

P was issued from August 1996 to July 1997. Any vehicle first registered from August 1996 onward can carry a P-prefix plate.

**Why do some prefix letters cover only six months?**

From 1999 the DVLA changed the letter every March and September to spread new-car sales across the year. S, T, V, W, X and Y are all six-month letters.

**Can I put a prefix plate on a car older than the letter?**

No. That would make the car appear newer than it is, which DVLA prohibits. It is the only age restriction on any transfer.

**Are prefix plates still being issued?**

No. The last prefix (Y) was issued in 2001. Every prefix plate on sale today is either unissued DVLA stock or a previously owned registration.
