## Price index by format

Median hammer price per quarter, smoothed over three quarters and indexed so that 2025 = 100. Above the dotted line means prices are higher than the base year.

 **Dateless
 **Prefix
 **Suffix
 **Current

Only quarters with at least 25 sales in a format are plotted; the line breaks where data is thin.

## What the data shows

- Dateless plates are up 12.9% year on year: the 2026 median hammer price is £3,760 across 3,209 sales.
- Prefix plates are flat 0.0% year on year: the 2026 median hammer price is £560 across 2,648 sales.
- Suffix plates are up 2.4% year on year: the 2026 median hammer price is £1,280 across 3,777 sales.
- Current plates are down 25.2% year on year: the 2026 median hammer price is £1,040 across 486 sales.
- Since 2025 the strongest performer is Dateless, now at 113 on the index (base year = 100).
- Results before 2025 are a small, hand-collected sample of notable sales (typically the most expensive lots of each year), so they appear in the table for interest but are excluded from the index.
- The highest hammer price on file is £400,000 for 25 O.

Medians rather than averages, so a single six-figure lot cannot drag a whole year. Cells with fewer than three sales are left blank; years shaded as small samples are hand-collected notable lots, not the whole market.

## How to read this index

Every point is a real hammer price from a DVLA Personalised Registrations auction or a recognised auction house, never an asking price. Plates are grouped into four formats: dateless (pre-1963 and Northern Irish, no age identifier), suffix (1963-83), prefix (1983-2001) and current (2001 onwards). For each quarter we take the median price in each format, smooth it over three quarters to reduce single-auction noise, and express it relative to the base year. Quarters with too few sales are left off rather than guessed.

An index is a guide to direction, not a valuation. Mix matters: a month heavy with short dateless lots will read high regardless of underlying demand. For a specific registration, run it through the free valuer - it prices against comparable plates of the same format, not the market as a whole.
