How the Current Format Works
Introduced in September 2001, the current style is the registration format Britain now knows best: two letters, two numbers, then three letters, in the shape of AB12 CDE.
The first two letters are the regional tag from where the plate was first issued. The two numbers are the age identifier, changing every March and September, which is why a 2012 spring registration reads 12 and an autumn one reads 62. The final three letters are effectively random, and that is where the fun starts.
Those closing three letters are the engine of the modern personalised market. Because they can form real words and names, registrations ending in blocks such as SAM, AMY, DAD or VIP read as genuine statements, and clever buyers pair them with meaningful year numbers: a birth year, an anniversary, the year of the car itself.
One footnote worth knowing: the letters I and Q never appear in the final trio, which is why some words simply cannot exist in this format. Everything else is fair game.

What is a current style number plate?
The format issued since September 2001: two regional letters, a two digit age identifier, and three further letters, in the shape of AB12 CDE. It is the standard registration on almost every modern British car and the most flexible format for personalisation.
Can I put a current style plate on an older car?
Only if the plate's age identifier is the same age as or older than the vehicle, since DVLA rules prevent a registration making a car look newer than it is. A 12 plate can go on a 2012 or newer car, but not a 2010 one. We check this for you before any transfer.
Why can't some words appear on current plates?
The letters I and Q are never used in the final three letter group, to avoid confusion with the numbers 1 and 0. Words that depend on those letters cannot exist in this format, though clever near-reads and other formats often solve the problem.
Are current style plates a good first private plate?
The best, for most people. Supply is deep, prices start low, name and word reads are plentiful, and the plate transfers with you from car to car for life. Many collectors started with a current style name block and traded up from there.
What do the two numbers on a current plate mean?
They are the age identifier, changing each March and September. March issues use the year itself, such as 26 for 2026, while September issues add fifty, giving 76. Buyers often choose a number that doubles as a birth year or anniversary.
