How Selling Through Us Works

Four steps from your first enquiry to money in your bank account. Most plates sell within 30 to 90 days.

STEP 1

Free Valuation

Tell us your plate. Our team benchmarks against live demand and recent sales, then sends a fair market valuation within one working day.

STEP 2

Agree Terms

We agree commission in writing before listing. Either a fixed percentage or an amount above your minimum net payout. You stay in control of the price.

STEP 3

We Market It

Your plate goes live across our buyer network. We qualify enquiries, negotiate on your behalf, and only bring you serious offers.

STEP 4

Get Paid

Once a buyer commits, we handle every DVLA form and signature. Funds clear, DVLA confirms the transfer, money lands in your bank account.

Why People Choose Us Over Selling Alone

Selling a plate yourself is possible. But the time, hassle, and risk usually outweigh the saving on commission. Here's how the two approaches compare.

Selling alone

Private sale or auction

THE SMART OPTION
Through us

BuyPrivatePlates.uk

Our commission is agreed in writing before your plate is listed. No hidden fees, no surprises after a sale.

What We Need From You

Selling through us is light on admin. Here is everything you need to have to hand before you start the form. None of this commits you to selling; it just helps us value accurately and verify ownership.

What Our Sellers Say

Rated 5 out of 5
“I had a three-letter dateless I had owned for 15 years and was nervous about selling online. The team valued it honestly, found a buyer faster than I expected, and the money was in my account inside a month. Couldn’t have asked for more.”

— Margaret H., Edinburgh

“Sold my late father’s plate as part of estate admin. They were respectful about the situation, dealt directly with my solicitor where needed, and handled the DVLA side completely. A genuinely thoughtful service.”

— Andrew T., Cheshire

“I run a small dealership and had three retained plates sitting on certificates. Listed all three, two sold within six weeks at prices I was happy with. The paperwork being done for me was the real win.”

— Steve B., Leeds

Seller Questions, Answered

Most plates that are priced realistically sell within 30 to 90 days. Highly desirable short plates often sell faster, while niche or specialist plates can take longer. We agree your minimum price and listing strategy up front, then keep you updated as enquiries come in.
Commission is agreed in writing before your plate is listed. It is either a fixed percentage of the sale price or an agreed amount above your minimum net payout. The exact figure depends on the plate, market demand, and the sale price you want to achieve. There is no listing fee and no fee if the plate does not sell.
You do. We provide a free expert valuation based on live demand and recent comparable sales, but the final asking price is your decision. We can flag if a chosen price is significantly above market expectations, but we will not list at a price you have not agreed to.
By bank transfer once two conditions are met: the buyer’s funds have cleared into our account, and the DVLA has confirmed the registration has been formally transferred or retained in the buyer’s name. Typically the whole sequence takes 7 to 14 working days from a buyer committing.
Nothing. There is no listing fee and no sale-no fee. You can leave the plate listed for as long as you’d like, adjust the price at any time, or withdraw it entirely. You remain the owner until a sale completes, and you can continue to retain or assign the plate yourself whenever you choose.
Not always. If your plate is currently assigned to a vehicle, we can guide you through retaining it onto a V778 certificate before sale. If it is already on a V750 or V778 retention certificate, you are good to list it as is. We will tell you which applies during the valuation.
Yes, but you will need written authority. Common cases are executors selling a plate from an estate, family members helping an elderly relative, business signatories selling a company plate, or solicitors acting under power of attorney. Send us the basics and we will tell you exactly what documentation is needed.
For most individual sellers, selling a single private plate is not a taxable event. Plates can fall under capital gains rules in some circumstances, particularly for higher-value sales or business owners. We are not tax advisors and recommend speaking to an accountant for definitive advice on your situation.
Yes. The standard process is to retain the plate onto a V778 certificate first, which removes it from the vehicle and assigns it back to a generic registration. Once on retention, we can list and sell it without affecting the car. The retention process is a standard DVLA service we can help arrange.
Tell us. You are free to consider any offer, but please be aware that you remain bound by our listing agreement during its term. If you’d prefer to accept a private offer, we can advise on the cleanest way to wind down the listing.

Commission, Fees & Legal

The full terms in plain English. Anything you do not understand, ask us before signing the listing agreement.

Commission

No listing fee. No sale, no fee. Commission is agreed in writing before listing, either as a fixed percentage of sale price or as an amount above your minimum net payout. Payout is by bank transfer once funds clear and the DVLA confirms transfer.

Ownership

You must be the legal owner of the plate or have written authority to act for the owner. Provide a V5C log book or V750/V778 retention certificate for verification. Please obscure any sensitive personal data when sharing documents with us.

Buyer Process

We qualify buyers, negotiate on your behalf, and manage the DVLA transfer end to end. Registrations must not misrepresent vehicle age under DVLA rules, which means certain plates may have buyer restrictions we will explain during valuation.
