What Might Your Plate Be Worth?
Type any UK registration and our software sizes it up against thousands of real DVLA stock movements, live search demand, and the way the plate reads.
Automated guide only. Not a human valuation, not an offer, and quite possibly wrong in either direction. That is half the fun.
Your valuation will appear here. Try one of these to see it in action:
What Actually Makes a Number Plate Valuable?
The single biggest factor is the read: what the plate says. A registration that spells a real name or word appeals to everyone who shares that name or meaning, so buyers compete for it. Initials plates sit a step below, with a steady audience of drivers who share those letters. Below that come everyday registrations, which are pleasant but rarely fought over.
Numbers matter too. The number 1 is the most sought after digit on any plate, single digits carry a collector premium, and repeated or famous combinations such as 777 or 007 have followings of their own. A tidy short number will always beat a long forgettable one.
Then there is scarcity. If dozens of similar plates are sitting in DVLA stock at fixed retail prices, that live supply anchors what anyone will pay. When no equivalent read is available new, the right buyer sets the price instead, and values can move well beyond the history books.
Retail Price and Market Price Are Not the Same Thing
The DVLA sells new stock at fixed retail price bands. The resale market is a different animal: once a plate is no longer available new, its price is set by demand, and DVLA auction hammer prices regularly land several times higher than retail bands for desirable registrations. That gap between retail and market is exactly what this tool is built to read, using real hammer prices, our own database of stock movements, and live availability.
Dateless, Prefix, Current and Northern Irish: a 60 Second Guide
Dateless registrations (issued before 1963, or their modern re-releases) carry no age identifier at all, which makes them the aristocracy of the plate world: short, ageless and heavily collected. Prefix plates (1983 to 2001) lead with a year letter, current style plates (2001 onwards) carry a two digit year identifier, and Northern Irish registrations use letter and number combinations with no visible age, making them a popular way to hide a vehicle's year at a friendly price.
About This Valuation Tool
Type any UK registration above and our software builds an automated guide band from the evidence it can find: DVLA auction results, our stock movement database, live supply of similar reads, and search demand on this site. Every valuation explains its own reasoning, and every valuation is a rough automated guide rather than a human opinion or an offer. For a plate you actually own, the honest next step is a proper valuation from real people, and the button below does exactly that.
