Private Plates on Two Wheels
A private registration belongs to a vehicle record, not to a body style, so everything on this site can be assigned to a motorcycle exactly as it would to a car: the same search, the same DVLA transfer, the same certificate if you are gifting or waiting for the right machine.
Bikes do bring two happy differences. Display first: motorcycles registered since September 2001 need only a rear plate, so your read is seen precisely where following traffic looks. Size second: bike plates are physically smaller, which is why short reads shine here. A three letter name or word block fills a motorcycle plate with real presence.
The one rule that never changes is age: an age identified registration must not make the bike look newer than it is, while dateless and Northern Irish marks fit machines of any year, classics included.
Popular routes for riders: name blocks, initials, and reads that nod to the machine or the culture around it. The finder below searches live stock for exact block matches.

Motorbike Plates FAQ
Do motorbikes need a front number plate?
No. Motorcycles registered since 1 September 2001 must display a plate at the rear only. Older machines are also generally rear-only in practice, as front plates were phased out decades ago. Your read faces exactly where everyone actually looks.
Is the transfer process different for a motorcycle?
No. The registration assigns to the bike's record through the same DVLA process as any car, and we handle all of it. Retention certificates work identically too, so a plate can wait for a bike still being restored or not yet bought.
Can I put a private plate on a classic bike?
Yes, respecting the age rule: the registration must not make the machine look newer than it is. Dateless and Northern Irish marks carry no age identifier and suit classics perfectly, keeping the period look intact.
Can I move a plate between my bike and my car?
Yes. A registration can be retained from one vehicle and assigned to another regardless of vehicle type, as long as the receiving vehicle meets the age rule. Plenty of our customers rotate a favourite read seasonally.
Are smaller motorcycle plates legal with a private reg?
Yes. Motorcycle plates have their own standard dimensions and character sizes, and any registered plate supplier can make your private registration to them. The usual rules on font and spacing apply exactly as on a car.

Put my paddock name on the back of the GS and it gets photographed at every meet. The finder found it in seconds and the transfer took four days.
Moved my initials plate from the car to the bike for summer and back again in October. Both transfers handled without me touching a form.
Restored a seventy nine classic and finished it with a dateless mark so nothing dates it. The team checked eligibility before I paid, which I appreciated.
